Waypoint Budget vs Honeydue: Which Couples App is Better? (2026)

Two popular options for couples budgeting, but very different approaches. Here's how they compare.

By Ahmad Jamal · Published March 31, 2026 · 7 min read

Sharing money with a partner is its own skill, separate from budgeting solo. You're not just tracking spending anymore, you're building a shared picture that both of you actually trust. Waypoint Budget and Honeydue are both built around that idea, but they solve it in very different ways.

Quick disclosure: I build Waypoint Budget with my partner Florencia out of Calgary, a bootstrapped team of two who budget together ourselves (I build, she designs). That gives me a stake in this comparison, so I've tried to be fair about where Honeydue actually wins, and I'll say so plainly.

Quick Answer

Waypoint Budget is the better fit for most Canadian couples because it offers reliable bank sync through both Plaid and Flinks, TFSA/RRSP tracking on Pro, and household sharing for up to 5 people from $12.99 CAD/mo. Honeydue is a genuinely free, U.S.-first app with real strengths: built-in partner chat and more granular per-account privacy. If you're American, or those two things matter most to you, Honeydue is worth a look.

Where Honeydue Falls Short for Canadians

Honeydue was built for the U.S. market. That's not a knock on it, it's just context, and for American couples it works as intended. Canadian couples run into real friction, though, in a few specific places.

Bank Sync Is Unreliable

The most common complaint from Canadian Honeydue users is bank connectivity. Its sync was designed around U.S. institutions, so many Canadian users find that connections with major banks fail to establish, drop frequently, or show stale data. When sync doesn't work, you're back to entering transactions by hand, which defeats the point of linking accounts in the first place.

Waypoint Budget connects through both Plaid and Flinks for Canadian bank sync (Plus and Pro), covering major banks with transactions syncing automatically in the background. Flinks adds deeper coverage for Canadian banks and credit unions where Plaid falls short, so if one provider doesn't support your bank, the other usually does.

No Canadian Tax Account Tracking

If you and your partner are trying to maximize TFSA contributions or coordinate RRSP savings, Honeydue can't help. It has no concept of Canadian registered accounts: no contribution room tracking, no RRSP reporting, nothing built for the Canadian tax system.

That's a real gap for couples building wealth together in Canada. Waypoint Budget's Pro plan ($12.99 CAD/mo) tracks TFSA and RRSP contributions so both partners can see where they stand on registered accounts.

Limited Budgeting Depth

Honeydue keeps things simple: basic categories and spending limits, no budget calendar, no goal tracking, no detailed reports. If you just want to see what each of you spent on groceries last month, that might be enough. If you're saving for a down payment or managing variable income together, it isn't.

Waypoint Budget's Couples Features

Waypoint Budget's answer to couples budgeting is Household Sharing on the Pro plan. Instead of maxing out at two people, a household holds up to 5 members, useful for couples, but also families or roommates splitting rent. Only the household owner needs Pro. Everyone they invite joins free, and each member connects their own bank accounts, with the household's 5 bank connections shared across everyone in it.

There's also room for the parts of your finances you don't want to share. Multiple Budget Profiles (Pro, up to 5) let each person keep a private personal budget alongside the shared household one, switched from a simple profile switcher. Share the joint budget for rent and groceries, and keep your own private one for gifts, a side project, or anything else that's just yours.

For the spending that does get shared, Group Budgets (available on every plan, including Free) pool a whole category group into one budget instead of capping each category on its own. Put Groceries, Dining, and Coffee into a single Food group with an $800 pool, for example: overspend on takeout one week, underspend on groceries the next, and it still draws from the same total. Bills in the pool still show up on the budget calendar when they're due.

Household Sharing at a Glance

  • Honeydue: free for both partners, capped at 2 people, with in-app chat and per-account privacy.
  • Waypoint Budget: Pro ($12.99 CAD/mo) shares one budget, transactions, and goals with up to 5 members. Only the owner pays, invited members join free, and each person can also keep a private personal budget.

Smart Money Coach for the Whole Household

Every Waypoint Budget user has access to the Smart Money Coach, which gives personalized tips based on real spending patterns. Free users get 5 messages a day each; Plus and Pro get unlimited. On Pro, once household sharing is on, the coach sees your shared household data, so its advice reflects your finances as a couple, not just one person's spending.

Goals, Calendar, and Receipt Scanning

Round out the picture with shared goal tracking for things like a vacation fund or a down payment, a budget calendar so upcoming bills show up for everyone (fewer "I thought you paid that" moments), and receipt scanning plus CSV import for logging shared expenses quickly. Honeydue offers none of these: no goal tracking, no calendar, no receipt scanning.

Pricing Comparison

Price is where Honeydue has the edge on paper: it's free. Shared account visibility, spending limits, and in-app chat all come at no cost.

Annual Cost Comparison

Honeydue (free, all features)$0/yr
Waypoint Budget Free$0/yr
Waypoint Plus (adds bank sync)$79.99 CAD/yr
Waypoint Pro (adds household sharing, TFSA/RRSP)$129.99 CAD/yr

Even Waypoint Budget's Pro plan, with full household sharing for up to 5 people, costs $129.99 CAD a year, about $10.83 CAD a month.

A note on currency

Honeydue's core app is free, but any premium features or in-app purchases are priced in USD, and it isn't built with Canadian users in mind more broadly. Waypoint Budget prices every plan in CAD, so the number you see is the number you pay.

If you and your partner just want basic shared visibility, Honeydue's free tier is hard to argue with. But if you want reliable Canadian bank sync, TFSA/RRSP tracking, or household sharing for more than two people, Waypoint Budget's paid tiers do a lot more, and the free tier alone still includes unlimited budget categories, goal tracking, and Smart Money Coach access, more than plenty of paid apps offer.

When to Choose Honeydue

Honeydue makes sense in specific situations, and being fair about where it fits is part of an honest comparison.

  • Are a U.S.-based couple with U.S. bank accounts.
  • Want a completely free app with no paid tier to think about.
  • Need per-account privacy, choosing exactly what your partner can see.
  • Want in-app messaging to talk about transactions without leaving the app.
  • Prefer a simpler, more focused app without extra budgeting tools.

Honeydue's per-account privacy is genuinely useful. If one of you wants to keep a personal account private while sharing the joint one, Honeydue lets you do that at a granular level, a different approach from Waypoint Budget's role-based system, where household members see shared data based on Owner or Member access.

The in-app chat is something Waypoint Budget doesn't have, either. Tapping a transaction to ask "what was this $45 charge?" is convenient. Most couples end up doing this over text anyway, but keeping it inside the app keeps the context attached.

When to Choose Waypoint Budget

Waypoint Budget is the stronger choice when you need more than basic shared spending visibility.

  • Are a Canadian couple who needs reliable bank sync through both Plaid and Flinks (Plus+).
  • Want to track TFSA and RRSP contributions together (Pro).
  • Want to share one household budget but also keep a private personal budget of your own (Multiple Budget Profiles, Pro).
  • Like the idea of pooling flexible spending, like groceries, dining, and coffee, into one shared budget instead of capping each on its own (Group Budgets, every plan).
  • Are saving toward shared goals: a down payment, a wedding, an emergency fund.
  • Want a Smart Money Coach that gives advice based on your combined household finances.
  • Have more than 2 people sharing expenses (up to 5 household members, Pro).
  • Prefer pricing in CAD rather than USD.

The biggest differentiator for Canadian couples is bank sync reliability. If you can't connect your bank accounts, the whole premise of a shared budgeting app falls apart. Waypoint Budget connects through both Plaid and Flinks, covering major Canadian banks and syncing automatically in the background, so both partners see up-to-date data without manual entry.

On Pro, the combination of TFSA/RRSP tracking and net worth tracking also gives couples a more complete financial picture. Instead of just seeing what you spent, you can see what you're building together: registered account balances, and overall net worth over time.

The Bottom Line

Honeydue and Waypoint Budget solve different problems. Honeydue is a focused, free couples app that suits U.S.-based partners who want simple shared visibility and a built-in way to talk about transactions. It does that one thing well and doesn't try to be more.

Waypoint Budget is a full budgeting platform built for Canadian users. The free tier already includes unlimited budget categories, goal tracking, a budget calendar, and the Smart Money Coach (5 messages a day), plus Group Budgets for pooling flexible spending. Plus ($7.99 CAD/mo) adds bank sync and unlimited coaching. Pro ($12.99 CAD/mo) adds household sharing for up to 5 people, private personal budget profiles, TFSA/RRSP tracking, and net worth, useful for couples and families alike.

If you're a Canadian couple who wants more than basic spending visibility, Waypoint Budget gives you the tools to manage money together, and keep some of it private when you want to. If you're in the U.S. and just want a free way to see each other's spending, Honeydue is a reasonable start. For more options, see our best budgeting apps for couples in 2026 roundup.
