Does YNAB Work in Canada?

Here is what you get, and what you pay for it

Yes. YNAB connects Canadian banks through Plaid and MX, and plenty of Canadians use it. What it does not do is bill in Canadian dollars: the price is US$14.99 a month or US$109 a year, so the exchange rate and any foreign transaction fee land on top.

It also has no Flinks connection for Canadian credit unions, and no TFSA or RRSP account types, so registered accounts sit in the list as generic balances.

Waypoint Budget is built in Canada, bills in Canadian dollars (Plus at CA$7.99 a month), reaches Canadian banks and credit unions through Plaid and Flinks on Plus and Pro, and tracks TFSA and RRSP accounts on Pro. The free plan covers manual entry, receipt scanning and import.

To Be Fair to YNAB

We believe in honest comparisons

Larger community: YNAB has been around since 2004 and has a massive community with forums, subreddits, and educational content.

Loan tracking: YNAB has dedicated loan tracking features. Waypoint Budget handles debt through budget categories and goal tracking.

Subscription sharing: A single YNAB subscription can be shared with up to 6 people. Waypoint Budget's household budgeting (Pro) supports shared budgets but requires a Pro subscription.

That said, Waypoint Budget matches or beats YNAB on the features most people use daily, at 47% less cost.

Common Questions from YNAB Users

Can I import my YNAB data?
Yes! You can export your YNAB transactions as CSV and import them directly into Waypoint Budget. Your transaction history and categories come along for the ride.
Is Waypoint Budget zero-based like YNAB?
No, and that's deliberate. YNAB requires you to assign every dollar a job and rebalance envelopes whenever plans change. Waypoint Budget uses simple monthly targets instead: set an amount for each category, let unspent money roll over where you want it to, and track spending against your targets. You keep control of every dollar without the nightly upkeep.
Is the free tier useful?
Yes. The free tier includes unlimited manual transactions, all budget categories, goal tracking, budget calendar, smart categorization, receipt scanning, CSV import, Smart Money Coach (5 messages/day), and unlimited transaction history. Many users stay on free permanently. The main thing you miss is automatic bank sync.
How does bank sync compare to YNAB?
Both support 10,000+ financial institutions across the US and Canada. Waypoint Budget uses Plaid and Flinks (with Flinks adding deeper Canadian coverage); YNAB uses Plaid and MX. Waypoint Plus includes 1 bank connection and Pro includes 5, with more available any time. YNAB includes unlimited connections but at a much higher price point.
What is the Smart Money Coach?
Smart Money Coach is a smart financial advisor built into Waypoint Budget. It analyzes your actual spending patterns and gives personalized suggestions, like “you spent 30% more on dining this month” or “here's how to save $200 next month.” YNAB doesn't have this.
