YNAB vs Waypoint Budget: Which is Better for Canadians? (2026)
A plain comparison of two zero-based budgeting apps for Canadians: pricing in CAD, Canadian bank support, TFSA and RRSP tracking, and how easy each one is to actually live with.
By Ahmad Jamal · Published January 15, 2026 · 10 min read
If you're Canadian and shopping for a budgeting app, you've almost certainly run into YNAB. It's one of the most popular zero-based budgeting tools in the world, with a devoted following and a deep library of teaching content. The real question is whether it fits north of the border.
Quick disclosure before we get into it: I build Waypoint Budget with my partner Florencia out of Calgary, so I have a stake in this. I also used YNAB for a long stretch before that, and month after month I fought the same Canadian papercuts: a bank that wouldn't connect, nowhere sensible to put my TFSA, a mortgage that kept landing in the wrong month. This is the honest comparison I wish I'd had, and I'll say plainly where YNAB is still the better call.
Quick Answer

Bank sync starts on Plus ($7.99 CAD/mo). TFSA and RRSP tracking, net worth, and household sharing are on Pro ($12.99 CAD/mo). Everything else, including 5 Smart Money Coach messages a day, is free.
Pricing: The Biggest Difference
YNAB only lists prices in US dollars: $14.99 USD/month or $109 USD/year. At roughly 1.4 CAD per USD, that lands near $21 CAD/month or $153 CAD/year on the annual plan, before your card adds anything for the currency conversion.
Waypoint Budget starts free and stays in CAD. Month to month, Plus is $7.99 CAD versus YNAB's roughly $21, about 62% less, or around $156 a year kept in your pocket if you compare the two monthly plans. On annual plans it's $79.99 CAD versus about $153, roughly 48% less. Either way, the free tier is a real budgeting app you can use for as long as you like.
Yearly Cost, Side by Side
Waypoint Plus at $79.99 CAD/yr comes in about $73 under YNAB's annual plan, with no foreign exchange added on top.
A note on USD pricing
There's also no clock. The Waypoint Budget free tier does not expire, so you can take your time before paying for anything, rather than racing a 34-day trial.
Canadian Bank and Account Support
This is where a US-first app tends to show its seams for Canadians, and it turns up in two places: which banks connect, and whether your registered accounts are welcome.
YNAB syncs through a service called Finicity, whose Canadian coverage is thinner than what US users get. The major banks (TD, RBC, BMO, Scotiabank, CIBC) are generally supported, but some Canadians hit connection trouble with smaller banks and credit unions.
Waypoint Budget connects through both Plaid and Flinks, which together reach 10,000+ financial institutions across North America and was built in Canada with Canadian banks as the priority. Because it runs two providers, if one does not support your bank the other usually does, and transactions sync automatically in the background so your budget stays current.
Canadian Banks Supported
- Major banks: TD, RBC, BMO, Scotiabank, CIBC
- Online banks: Tangerine, EQ Bank, Simplii Financial
- Credit unions: Coast Capital, Vancity, Desjardins, and hundreds more
- Investment accounts: Questrade, Wealthsimple, and more
TFSA and RRSP tracking is the widest gap. YNAB was designed around US account types like the 401(k) and IRA, so it does not track TFSAs or RRSPs at any price. For most Canadians those are the main savings vehicles, and seeing contribution room, withdrawals, and balances next to your budget matters. Waypoint Budget tracks both on the Pro plan ($12.99 CAD/mo).
Beyond the Basics
Smart Money Coach
When you have a question, YNAB points you to blog posts, videos, and its community. Waypoint Budget builds a Smart Money Coach right into the app, so you can ask things like:
- "Why am I over budget on groceries this month?"
- "Show my dining-out trend over the last 6 months."
- "How can I save $500 a month?"
It reads your own numbers, not generic tips. You get 5 messages a day on the free tier, and it's unlimited on Plus.
Month-End Bills
Pay your mortgage on November 30th and it's really your December payment. YNAB assigns it to November by default, so you fix the date by hand every month. Waypoint Budget automatically rolls a last-day-of-month bill into the next month's budget. This was the papercut that made me build the app in the first place.
Learning Curve
YNAB asks for real upfront time: tutorial videos, its Four Rules, ideas like Age of Money, and manual reconciliation. Waypoint Budget runs on the same zero-based method but guides you through setup step by step, with the Smart Money Coach on hand as you go. Most people are budgeting within about 10 minutes, not an evening of homework.
Who Should Choose YNAB
YNAB is a popular, well-established app, and it's the better pick in a few situations. Being honest about that helps you decide.
- You're already set up in YNAB. If you have years of history and a budget dialed in, the switch may not be worth the friction. Continuity has real value.
- You want the teaching content. YNAB has a large library of guides, videos, and workshops on its budgeting method. If you enjoy learning the methodology, that library is a genuine draw.
- Price isn't the deciding factor. If the roughly $21 CAD/mo doesn't bother you and you value the brand and community, YNAB is a reasonable choice.
- You don't need Canadian registered accounts. If you don't track a TFSA or RRSP, don't have month-end bill headaches, and your bank connects cleanly, YNAB can work fine.
Who Should Choose Waypoint Budget
For Canadians specifically, Waypoint Budget closes the gaps YNAB leaves open. These are the situations where it's the stronger choice.
- You want to pay less, in CAD. Plus is $7.99 CAD/mo, about 62% below YNAB, up to $156 a year saved, and billed in Canadian dollars with no exchange-rate surprises.
- You need reliable Canadian bank sync. Connecting through both Plaid and Flinks means Tangerine, EQ Bank, a credit union, or a smaller institution is far more likely to work than on YNAB's Finicity.
- You track a TFSA or RRSP. Pro follows your registered accounts alongside your budget. YNAB doesn't support them at any price.
- Your bills land at month-end. A mortgage or rent due on the last day is rolled into the right month automatically, no manual workaround required.
- You want to start today, not after a course. Setup takes about 10 minutes, with the Smart Money Coach answering questions as you go. No required tutorial videos.
- You budget with a partner or household. Pro shares one budget, transactions, and goals with up to 5 members, and only the owner pays: invited members join free. Group Budgets, on every plan including Free, let you pool categories like Groceries, Dining, and Coffee into one shared Food total.
The Verdict
For most Canadians, Waypoint Budget is the better choice. It costs less in CAD, syncs with Canadian banks more reliably through both Plaid and Flinks, tracks your TFSA and RRSP, handles month-end bills automatically, and gets you going in minutes.
YNAB is the better call if you're already a power user, value its teaching content, and price isn't the issue. It's a popular, well-established app, just not built with Canadian accounts in mind.
The good news is you don't have to guess. Because the free tier never expires, you can run Waypoint Budget alongside YNAB, see which one actually fits your month, and switch when it feels right.
Try Waypoint Budget free
Budget for free forever, or add bank sync on Plus ($7.99 CAD/mo), about 62% less than YNAB. Test it beside YNAB and switch when you're ready.
No credit card required. Built for Canadians. The free tier never expires.

Fantastic app to use. Developers are super helpful, provide and take great honest feedback. Really trying to make this app even more amazing then it already is. So happy I found it.

The program is great, but what sets it apart are two things: 1) When you need any questions answered, they answer by email within the same day. and 2) They are always upgrading their system with new features!

Great budgeting tool for less money than others. The dashboard is particularly insightful

A great replacement for MINT and more intuitive than MINT was!

what makes this a 5 star app is the few issues that arose or that I was confused about such as importing transactions and linking banks. I contacted the developer and they messaged back quickly that they implemented fix's for my issues and to retry it. this to me is a very active development team that cares about the product they are selling. 5 star for trust.

What an incredible find Waypoint Budget is! I used MINT for well over a decade before it ended, and then switched to YNAB for a couple of years as there seemed to be nothing else available to Canadians. While I liked some aspects of YNAB, it was very expensive and was pretty frustrating to work with in some of its features. I stumbled on Waypoint after asking the internet if any new alternatives were around, and it suggested this great program. Not only is it Canadian, but the price is far better than YNAB, the features are more straightforward to work with (more like MINT used to be), and its founder and designer is incredibly supportive with any questions I have. He has responded right away to any questions or problems I am facing and always makes sure I have everything working as it should be. He is even open to new suggestions of features that I enjoyed in YNAB that are missing in Waypoint and is always improving his program with new changes! It's so amazing to see it evolving. I ended my YNAB subscription and am very happy with my experience thus far with Waypoint. I have the PRO version and have my banks connected to download transactions, and I love that categorizing is straightforward and the dashboard gives me a clear picture of what I've spent in each category and what remains. I know Jamal, the founder, is working with bank connections to make them easier to refresh, but the workaround he gave me is perfect and works like a charm. I give this budgeting program five stars and would say it is worth its value as a life-long budget geek--but also because it is a young Canadian software developer who brought it into being! Incredible program and very worth the trial... and subsequent subscription!

Great budgeting app with very active development team! I've been using it for over 5 months and very happy with the user experience. The paid feature to use Plaid to sync bank transactions is worth considering on its own. Filters credit card payment and receive transactions well enough by itself and provides a lot of customization.

If you’re looking for a Canadian-made budgeting solution, look no further. Waypoint is easy to use, even for a budgeting novice — the layout and functionality just make sense, and there’s an app as well. Best of all, if you ever have questions, you get a real human to help you out quickly. Thank you!

Outstanding product built by an attentive and responsive team. By far the best budgeting tool I've tried. I wish they had a referral program because I'm already referring it to my close circle.

Just what I was looking for. Pulls transactions directly from my canadian bank accounts (works great for scotiabank and cibc), simple and clean design, ability to budget, track and compile reports on spending per category/month/year etc. Best such product out there for Canadians.
James W
One of the best budgeting apps I've used. Not unnecessarily invasive, functional, adaptable. Developing and updating faster than the issues can annoy you. Canadian made is also a huge bonus. Keep up the stellar work team!

This app makes budgeting and tracking your money simple. It is intuitive and well developed. But what really makes this app head and shoulders above other apps is the developers desire to make it better. Not only did they reply back to questions I had about certain functions (I find it rare that app developers even respond to emails or messages), they made changes to the app to address these issues. Amazing!!

As someone who is still a beginner when it comes to personal finance and budgeting, I've found Waypoint to be incredibly helpful in terms of making the process of tracking expenses and learning how to budget less daunting. I haven't upgraded to being able to sync banking transactions just yet, but even the process of manually entering my expenses, and having a clear visual of where I'm at and my goals has been empowering. I especially love the dashboard, the user interface is easy to navigate. Excited to continue to explore the different features Waypoint has to offer, and to see the platform grow as whole :)
Shannon Talarico
So far so great!!! Coming from a different budgeting app to this one I am really happy with the layout and simplicity/intuitiveness of the various tabs and views. I like so many of the features and I'm happy to be supporting a Canadian company. I wish I didn't have to reconnect the banks so often but I understand that is a bank issue and not something within Waypoint's control. They make it easy to reconnect so that's good.
Jared Friesen

I'm a senior with a bit of bookkeeping experience from long ago. That's relevant because I am thrilled to bits that I have found Waypoint to be so easy to use. Of course, there is a learning curve, but between Waypoint themselves and ChatGPT, I've been able to navigate the whole thing. I highly recommend Waypoint -- it's designed for Canadians, which is huge for me, and designed with privacy integrity as well.
Seif Allaoua
Impressive, it really surpassed my expectations, and I am usually a difficult customer when it comes to technology solutions. As a computer engineer myself, and a two weeks customer, I can already tell that the team at WayPoint did a fantastic work on this, despite Canadian banks having legacy and conservative methods of interacting with third parties. Two weeks in, I have already started seeing improvement in the way I manage my finances and I am able to forecast what's coming in savings, spending and reaching long term financial goals. A true five star solution. Thank you

I have been looking for a way to budget as I look move towards retirement. I had tried YNAB, MINT, and a few others, but found them too complicated. Many of the apps have very dark interfaces which is off putting to me. When I came upon Waypoint Budget, the first thing I liked was the clean look of the website. It is easy to navigate between the different tools - budget, categories, transactions, etc. I was able to connect my bank easily. I now actually enjoy keeping track of my finances. The tool is great, but the service is even better. I had a couple of questions and when I wrote to the website creator, he connected with me within hours, sometimes minutes. He is awesome to work with and has even taken a suggestion I made to make the website even better. He is constantly striving to meet the needs of his clients. I gladly signed up for a year. Check out Waypoint Budget. You will not be disappointed.

The book mark version has proven to be so helpful in managing my money in a simple format that is easy to review and edit - along with subscribing to access one financial institution ($8/month CAD) to track my accounts - while the goals dashboard keeps me on track to paying down debt. Now they have finally created an app... (as of July 2026)... time will tell how that compares.
Kristin Gyuran

Waypoint is amazing. It's intuitive and easy to use. It allows you to set goals, track budget lines, group things together into categories and shows pie charts of the percentages of your budget. You can set goals and feel completely in control and informed. It's an excellent budgeting app the the customer service is second to none.

Great canadian financial planning application. Focuses on what's important, lots of potential and delivers on most of it, the rest will come as they are updating the application steadily on what matters most. Support is superb, quick, detailed, with troubleshooting steps and possible solutions as soon as the first message.

It's a really great tool to get you started on your budgeting journey. Easy to understand and navigate, easy to customize. On top of that they have rapid customer service - when I had questions they would respond within 24h-48h. Impressive stuff! Keep doing what you're doing.

This is the best Canadian budgeting platform I've used so far. Support is superb, quick, detailed, with troubleshooting steps and possible solutions as soon as the first message.

Great with Canadian bank. The user interface is great. Budget tool is perfect.

Outstanding product built by an attentive and responsive team. By far the best budgeting tool I've tried. I wish they had a referral program because I'm already referring it to my close circle.

This is the best Canadian budgeting platform I've used so far. I've tried many other budgeting platforms, but always ended up going back to my spreadsheets-until now. the layout is clean and intuitive, and its incredibly simple and efficient to use. waypoint budget finally gives me everything i liked about with my spreadsheets, without the hassle.

One of the best budgeting apps I've used. Not unnecessarily invasive, functional, adaptable. Developing and updating faster than the issues can annoy you. Canadian made is also a huge bonus. Keep up the stellar work team!

the subscriptions tracking love how it automates and fills in by itself without having me to manually input each transaction every time good transaction tracking, I love the budgeting feature helps to see what payments are coming up and how much is you fixed total cost per month.

Fantastic app to use. Developers are super helpful, provide and take great honest feedback. Really trying to make this app even more amazing then it already is. So happy I found it.
Maxime
Great interface and support for banks.

I looked and downloaded a lot of budgeting apps but this one is my fav. Its so easy to upload transaction my problem was connecting my bank to the app but now i just upload screen shots directly

Great budgeting tool for less money than others. The dashboard is particularly insightful

Wonderful experience excellent customer support and product!!

what makes this a 5 star app is the few issues that arose or that I was confused about such as importing transactions and linking banks. I contacted the developer and they messaged back quickly that they implemented fix's for my issues and to retry it. this to me is a very active development team that cares about the product they are selling. 5 star for trust.

New to this app and love it. I really appreciate how you can interact with the creators to ask questions and recommend improvements. I find it easy to use and it syncs with my bank easily. Would highly recommend to anyone wishing to be more mindful with their money.

Great budgeting app with very active development team! I've been using it for over 5 months and very happy with the user experience. The paid feature to use Plaid to sync bank transactions is worth considering on its own. Filters credit card payment and receive transactions well enough by itself and provides a lot of customization.

I've been looking for an effective tool since Mint shutdown. Although there's some app glitches still being sorted out, Waypoint is 100% the best option I've had available to me!

The program is great, but what sets it apart are two things: 1) When you need any questions answered, they answer by email within the same day. and 2) They are always upgrading their system with new features!

In-depth analysis of my finance. Visual and easy to use. The best app.

Waypoint is very user friendly with a clean and simple user interface. It's super helpful and gives great insight into household finances.

A great replacement for MINT and more intuitive than MINT was!
Helene
The book mark version has proven to be so helpful in managing my money in a simple format that is easy to review and edit - along with subscribing to access one financial institution ($8/month CAD) to track my accounts - while the goals dashboard keeps me on track to paying down debt. Now they have finally created an app... (as of July 2026)... time will tell how that compares.

Amazing!!

Waypoint is amazing. It's intuitive and easy to use. It allows you to set goals, track budget lines, group things together into categories and shows pie charts of the percentages of your budget. You can set goals and feel completely in control and informed. It's an excellent budgeting app the the customer service is second to none.
Sabine
If you’re looking for a Canadian-made budgeting solution, look no further. Waypoint is easy to use, even for a budgeting novice — the layout and functionality just make sense, and there’s an app as well. Best of all, if you ever have questions, you get a real human to help you out quickly. Thank you!
Johnny D.
It's a really great tool to get you started on your budgeting journey. Easy to understand and navigate, easy to customize. On top of that they have rapid customer service - when I had questions they would respond within 24h-48h. Impressive stuff! Keep doing what you're doing.

Just what I was looking for. Pulls transactions directly from my canadian bank accounts (works great for scotiabank and cibc), simple and clean design, ability to budget, track and compile reports on spending per category/month/year etc. Best such product out there for Canadians.
Jacques Persoons
Finally find an app that suits all our needs. Quite Simple to use and very intuitive. I tried few other apps that were WAY TO COMPLICATED! It is also well adapted for Canadians. Customer service is also top of the line…

Thank you
