Frequently Asked Questions
How much OSAP will I get?
Your OSAP funding depends on several factors including your family income (if dependent), tuition costs, living expenses, and study period length. Low-income students typically receive more grants, while higher-income families receive primarily loans. Use the calculator above to get a personalized estimate based on your situation.
What is the difference between OSAP grants and loans?
OSAP grants are free money you don't have to pay back, awarded based on financial need. OSAP loans must be repaid after graduation, but federal loans have 0% interest (permanent since April 2023), and Ontario loans charge Prime + 1%. If you earn under $40,000 after graduation, you may qualify for Repayment Assistance that reduces or eliminates payments.
Am I eligible for OSAP?
To qualify for OSAP, you must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person; be an Ontario resident; be enrolled in an approved post-secondary program; and demonstrate financial need. Both full-time and part-time students can apply. There are no age restrictions for OSAP eligibility.
When should I apply for OSAP?
Apply at least 60 days before your study period starts to ensure funding arrives on time. You can apply up to 60 days before your study period ends. OSAP applications are accepted year-round at ontario.ca/osap. Early application is recommended as processing can take 4-6 weeks.
Does my parents' income affect my OSAP?
If you're a dependent student (less than 4 years out of high school), your family's income is considered. You're considered independent if you've been out of high school for 4+ years, are married/common-law, have dependents, or meet other criteria. Independent students only report their own income, which typically results in higher OSAP funding.
Can I get OSAP if my family makes over $100,000?
Yes, you can still receive OSAP funding, though it will be primarily loans rather than grants. Families earning under $50,000 receive the most grants. Between $50,000-$140,000, you'll receive a mix of grants and loans. Above $140,000, you're ineligible for Ontario grants but may still qualify for federal loans and grants depending on other factors.
OSAP Grants vs Loans
Grants = Free Money
You don't pay these back. Based on your income level.
Loans = Must Repay
Repayment starts 6 months after you finish school. Federal loans: 0% interest permanently. Ontario loans: Prime + 1% (~7-8%).
