Log an Expense by Double Tapping Your iPhone
By Ahmad Jamal · Published October 20, 2026 · 3 min read
The purchases that slip through a budget are the small ones: a coffee on the way in, parking, a snack. Opening an app for each of them is just enough friction that most people stop. As of version 1.4.2 of the Waypoint Budget iPhone app, you do not have to open anything. Tap the back of your phone twice, say what you bought, and it is in your budget.
Quick Answer
Double tap to log is in the Waypoint Budget iPhone app, version 1.4.2 and newer, on every plan including Free. It uses Back Tap, which is built into iOS 17 and newer, or the Action button on iPhone 15 Pro and newer. Setup is one tap in the app and one pick in iPhone Settings. There is no Android version yet.
How It Works
Tap the back of your iPhone twice and say what you bought, like “4.50 coffee”. A card in Waypoint Budget's colours confirms the amount, the category it picked and the payee, and the purchase shows up in Activity dated today. The app never opens.
What you say is read the same way Quick Add reads it, so “4.50 coffee” lands in Dining Out and “32 gas” in Transportation, using the categories you already have. It goes to the budget you last had open in the app, the same as the + button and the widgets. Leave out the amount and nothing is saved.
Set It Up in Three Steps
- Add it in the app. Update Waypoint Budget from the App Store if you have not already, then open Profile, Integrations, Double tap to log, and tap Add double tap. That adds a small Shortcut called Log expense to your iPhone.
- Pick it under Back Tap. Open the iPhone Settings app, search for Back Tap, tap Double Tap, and choose Log expense under Shortcuts.
- Try it. Tap the back of your phone twice and say “4.50 coffee”. The card confirms it, and the purchase is in Activity.
On an iPhone 15 Pro or newer you can put it on the Action button instead: Settings, Action Button, Shortcut, then Log expense. If the phone is locked, it asks for Face ID first.
No Doubles with Bank Sync
If your bank is connected, the same coffee reaches Waypoint Budget again a day or a few later when Bank sync runs. Instead of adding a second row, Bank sync takes over the one you logged when the amount and date line up: an amount with cents, within a few days, with one clear match. You keep the category and payee you said, and the transaction gains the bank's record underneath it.
Whole-dollar amounts are left alone on purpose: a $20 you logged and a $20 at the bank are too easy to confuse with a different purchase, and a double you can delete beats two real purchases merged into one. The same matching already covers anything you type into Quick Add, so Bank sync members can keep logging the small stuff themselves.
Log the small stuff without opening the app
Get the Waypoint Budget iPhone app and turn on Double tap to log under Profile, Integrations.
