Release Notes

What's New in Waypoint Budget

New features, improvements, and fixes. Here's everything we've built, straight from our release announcements.

Your Budget Needs Less Babysitting

Manual Account Balances That Keep Up · Variable Income Streams · Calendar Upgrades · Smarter Categorization

Manual Account Balances That Keep Up

Importing a CSV or PDF statement into a manual account can now update the account's balance to match, with a live preview of the new number before you commit. Transfers can move manual balances too. Set the In or Out direction on a transfer and the account balance follows. A big one for anyone who budgets with manual accounts.

Manual Account Balances That Keep Up demo

Variable Income Streams

Does your income change from paycheque to paycheque? Variable income is now better supported throughout the app, including "next expected payday" dates that feed right into your calendar so you can plan around when money is coming in.

Variable Income Streams screenshot

Calendar Upgrades

The calendar now follows your budget month by month. A few more touches: hover over a day to see its net cash flow (money in minus money out), already-paid bills are clearly marked, and yearly payments display correctly. Expenses that repeat every two months are supported too, so bi-monthly schedules finally show up right.

Smarter Categorization

We spent a good chunk of this week improving how your transactions get named and sorted. We also filled a lot of gaps in our merchant list, with extra attention on US brands for our American users. The result: fewer transactions landing in Uncategorized, and less tidying up after each sync.

Under the Hood

A handful more fixes and improvements you may notice this week:

  • Split transactions: You can now undo a split, add a note to a split, and see split categories right in the transactions list. The rollover category summary is more helpful too.
  • Smarter statement review: editing a transaction during import is much nicer now, with tap-to-pick type chips, transfer In/Out chips, and a mobile-friendly date picker.
  • Goals page: smoother projection graphs and better interaction on mobile
  • Dashboard: your set-aside total now breaks down so you can see what makes it up.
  • Transactions page: renders much faster with large histories.
  • Bank connections: accounts are visible during your first Flinks sync instead of a blank wait, plus fixes for missing accounts, duplicate accounts in households, and reconnect limits.

Make Your Dashboard Truly Yours

Dashboard Customization · Smarter Money Coach

Dashboard Customization

Your dashboard is now yours to arrange. Resize, reorder, and rearrange your cards to put what matters most front and center. It works on both mobile and desktop. We've also added some new cards that pull in information from other pages, like Reports, so you can see more without leaving home.

Smarter Money Coach

Your Money Coach just got an upgrade. It's now up to speed on all the newer features we've shipped recently, so its advice is more relevant than ever. Best of all, it can now create charts for you, turning your questions into clear visuals right in the chat.

Category Group Budgets and Planning Ahead

Category Group Budgets · Plan Ahead · Fixed vs Flexible, Your Call

Category Group Budgets

Your categories can now work as a team. Bundle related ones like Groceries, Dining, and Coffee into a single "Food" budget and track them together. Cook more one month, dine out the next. It all comes from the same total.

Category Group Budgets demo

Plan Ahead

Not every month looks the same, so now your budget can flex with it. Set a different amount for any month ahead, like a bigger grocery budget in December or a one-off car bill in March. Future you is already covered.

Fixed vs Flexible, Your Call

Your money, your definitions. In Reports, you can now mark any category as fixed or flexible yourself, so your spending breakdown reflects how you think about your finances.

Your Budget Just Got Smarter

Income Sources · Group For Me · Net Worth Chart Events · Auto-Funding for Rollover Categories · Household Improvements

Income Sources

You can now break your income into sources, like salary, rental income, or freelance work, and track each one separately. Your budget and reports pick them up automatically, so you can finally see not just what you earned, but where it came from.

You can manage your income sources anytime by going to the budget page, then categories, then find them under the income group. Once they're set up, just pick a source when you add or edit an income transaction, and your reports do the rest.

Income Sources demo

Group For Me

Got a long, flat list of categories? Waypoint Budget can now organize it for you. One tap proposes tidy groups like food and bills, and you review everything before it happens.

Group For Me demo

Net Worth Chart Events

Your net worth graph now tells the story behind the line. When you add or remove an account, it shows up right on the chart, so a jump in your net worth always has an explanation. Tooltips are smarter too, grouping accounts by institution, and only live accounts are counted in your totals.

Net Worth Chart Events screenshot

Auto-Funding for Rollover Categories

Rollover categories can now fund themselves. Choose how each category refills every month, whether it sets aside a fixed amount or tops back up to a target, and Waypoint Budget handles it automatically when the new month starts. A new month strip makes it easy to see where you stand at a glance.

Auto-Funding for Rollover Categories screenshot

Household Improvements

The Household page got a full refresh, and members now have more control. A new privacy toggle lets you keep your bank balances to yourself while budgeting together, and shared goals now show every member's payments in the goal history, so you both always see the full picture.

Household Improvements screenshot

Under the Hood

A handful more fixes and improvements you may notice this week:

  • Smarter e-transfer tracking: Fewer transfers mislabeled as income or spending.
  • Bulk actions: Assign an account to many transactions at once.
  • Bank connections: Redesigned connection cards on mobile, and clear warnings before an account ever stops syncing.
  • Sync reliability: Better handling of pending to posted transactions and first-sync categorization.
  • Demo mode: Faster loading and better sample data for anyone test-driving the app.
  • iOS app improvements: Smoother upgrades, keyboard fixes, and lifecycle emails for iOS users.
  • Plus smoother popups and animations, and a fix for report scoping.

Your App, Your Way

Customizable Navigation · Improved Subscriptions Page · Redesigned Goals · Expanded Manual Accounts

Customizable Navigation

You can now reorder and group your sidebar and bottom navigation menu items to suit how you use the app whether on mobile or desktop. Go to the Profile Settings page to manage this.

Customizable Navigation screenshot

Improved Subscriptions Page

The Subscriptions page has a cleaner layout, and now includes merchant logos. Real brand logos now pull in automatically, and we've added several missing ones.

Improved Subscriptions Page screenshot

Redesigned Goals

The Goals page has been redesigned to help you get the information you need, at a glance. Active and completed goals have a cleaner, nicer UI, the debt payoff timeline now handles long horizons properly, projection charts are improved, and there's a new insights panel to help you understand where you stand.

Expanded Manual Accounts

Manual accounts are now more capable than ever. You can link transactions to a manual account, and the account balance updates automatically as you do. You can import transactions straight into one from a CSV. You can even connect manual accounts to your goals to track progress.

Under the Hood

A handful more fixes and improvements you may notice this week:

  • Improved Reports page: cleaner layout and smarter fixed vs. variable spending tracking.
  • Improved Calendar: cleaner agenda and week view.
  • Smarter in-app help: the Waypoint Guide has been rebuilt to give more accurate, friendly answers, walk you through features, and check your live bank connection health.
  • Pending transaction tags: transactions that haven't posted yet now show a clear "pending" label.
  • YNAB import: now brings over your tags, plus better date parsing for imported data.
  • More reliable bank sync: fewer duplicate transactions, better handling of pending to posted updates, smarter institution search, improved reconnect flow on phones, and bank-specific handling for Desjardins, Manulife, and overdraft accounts.
  • iOS app improvements: smoother upgrades, keyboard fixes, and lifecycle emails for iOS users.

Waypoint Budget is on the App Store

On the App Store and Google Play · Manual Accounts · Extra Bank Connections Add-on · Improved Import Flow

On the App Store and Google Play

Waypoint Budget is officially on the App Store and Google Play. The PWA isn't going anywhere, this is just another way to get to us :)

Manual Accounts

You can now, finally, add accounts manually. Pick an account type (checking, savings, credit, cash, investment, or loan), add your bank, and update the balance whenever you need to.

Manual accounts count toward your net worth and your dashboard balance (you control which ones show). You can also select them when adding/editing transactions or importing statements and receipts. Available on every plan.

Next up for manual accounts: an option for balances to update automatically as you add transactions. Coming soon.

Manual Accounts demo

Extra Bank Connections Add-on

Need more bank connections than your plan includes? You can now purchase additional ones individually. Manage or remove them anytime from your Profile Settings page.

Please note this add-on is only available for Pro users at this time once they cross five connections.

Extra Bank Connections Add-on screenshot

Improved Import Flow

Importing is now a single tap: CSV, bank statement, or receipt photos. Error messages are clearer, so you'll know exactly what to fix. Imports can now also be linked to manual accounts.

Import transactions dialog with a single drop zone for CSV, PDF, and receipt photos

Under the Hood

A handful more fixes and improvements you may notice this week:

  • PC Financial and Canadian Tire bank connections are back up and running. If you were having trouble connecting either of these, please give it another try.
  • Budget presets for secondary budgets: when creating a secondary budget, you can now pick a starting template instead of building from scratch.
  • Category picker: tap search and see your full scrollable category list instead of having to type from memory.
  • Budget allocation notes: add a note to any category budget allocation, just like you can on transactions. Handy if you group multiple things under one category and want to remember why.
  • Goals and debt payoff: updated debt strategy summary, refreshed goal chips, fixed payday scheduling, and fixed a goal target bug flagged by a user.

Missed us? We're back, and we brought gifts

One Account, Multiple Budgets · Compact View & Faster Transaction Adding · Redesigned Safe to Spend · Tag Your Transactions · Smarter Categorization

One Account, Multiple Budgets

You can now run more than one budget under the same Waypoint Budget account. Perfect for keeping your personal budget separate from a side hustle or business expenses. Switch between them in a tap. Please note that the same bank connections currently in your plan still apply across budgets.

One Account, Multiple Budgets demo

Compact View & Faster Transaction Adding

If you scroll through a lot of transactions, the new compact mode shows more on screen at once without losing readability. We also reimagined manual transaction entry from the ground up: a redesigned modal, a cleaner split-transaction dialog, quick-tap category chips, and a shorter form for manual entries, all built to help you budget more efficiently.

Compact View & Faster Transaction Adding demo

Redesigned Safe to Spend

We redesigned the Safe to Spend card from scratch. Same feature you know, with a whole new look that matches the rest of the dashboard better.

Redesigned Safe to Spend screenshot

Tag Your Transactions

Tag your transactions however you want. Add tags like "Travel: Italy 2026," "Tax-deductible," or "Reimbursable from work" to any transaction. Customize your tags to suit your needs.

Tag Your Transactions demo

Smarter Categorization

A few real improvements here, including one important fix:

  • Caught a pattern where outgoing e-Transfers and ATM withdrawals were being mistyped as "Income"
  • Transfer detection is smarter now too, with fewer false positives and better handling of edge cases like internal transfers
  • Orphan transactions now reconnect properly once your bank comes back online
  • And many other improvements to the categorization engine

Under the Hood

Dozens of small bug fixes flagged by our customers (special shout-out to Rita & Colleen 🙏), and countless tiny UI improvements that add up.

Your Goals Just Got a Lot Smarter

Bank Accounts Linked to Goals · Bank Connections Redesign

Bank Accounts Linked to Goals

You can now connect any tracked bank account directly to a savings or debt goal. Once linked, the goal automatically reflects your live account balance, so there's no more manually logging contributions. We also improved the projection chart and redesigned the goals card to make everything easier to read at a glance.

Bank Accounts Linked to Goals demo

Bank Connections Redesign

The Bank Connections section has been cleaned up with more compact cards and clearer at-a-glance status. A few notable improvements in here: if a bank has a known service issue, you'll now see an inline status notice sourced directly from Flinks in real time, so you always know what's going on without having to wonder.

Bank Connections Redesign screenshot

Under the Hood

A few more fixes and improvements you may notice this week:

  • Transfer detection: credit card payments now auto-link to the matching outflow on the checking side
  • Split transactions are now excluded from reports for cleaner totals
  • Better detection of duplicate transactions
  • Mobile keyboard now scrolls the input you're typing into into view
  • Cleaner onboarding navigation

Case Closed On Mystery Spending

Budget History · Unbudgeted Spending Alerts

Budget History

You can now see how your budgets and category allocations have changed over time. Each month is preserved as a true snapshot, so adjusting your allocations today won't rewrite what past months looked like. Useful for spotting trends and understanding where your money went at a glance.

Unbudgeted Spending Alerts

You can now get a notification when you spend in a category you haven't budgeted for. A small thing that makes a real difference for keeping your budget complete, so nothing slips through the cracks. Totally optional, so you're not constantly getting notifications to your phone.

Unbudgeted Spending Alerts screenshot

Under the Hood

A handful more fixes and improvements you may notice this week:

  • Smarter account dropdown: transaction filters now show the bank name alongside the account, for example "Vancity · Chequing" instead of a generic identifier. Much easier to tell accounts apart when you have multiple banks connected.
  • Budget Calendar: you can now navigate backward through previous months without leaving the calendar view.
  • Refreshed dashboard cards: cleaner visual treatment across the board.
  • Refunds now correctly classified: previously refunds were occasionally counted as expenses. They're now properly recognized so your spending totals stay accurate.
  • Rollover categories: fixed a bug where deleting a transaction could leave a phantom deduction on a rollover budget.
  • Bank name resolution: newer bank connections now correctly display the bank name and logo from the start, instead of showing a generic identifier.
  • Scotia and TD sync reliability: both now route through Plaid for a more reliable connection.

You asked. We delivered!

Transfer Detection · Account Nicknames · Transaction Notes · Budget Group Drill-Down

Transfer Detection

When you move money between your own connected accounts, Waypoint Budget now automatically links both sides of the transfer so it doesn't double-count in your budget. Works across Plaid and Flinks accounts, and includes Interac e-Transfer support.

Transfer Detection screenshot

Account Nicknames

You can now rename any connected account to whatever makes sense to you: "House Money", "Date Night Visa", "Joint Savings". Nicknames show up everywhere across the app, including your dashboard, transaction list, net worth, and reports. Get creative!

Account Nicknames screenshot

Transaction Notes

You can now add a note to any transaction. Notes for future you, basically. Flag a potential tax write-off, remind yourself to ask about a recurring charge, or just add context you'll be glad you have later. A small icon appears next to the transaction when a note exists.

Transaction Notes demo

Budget Group Drill-Down

You can now click any group in the budget breakdown chart to see more details. The donut chart and legend swap to show that group's categories, with smart auto-shading so you can visually distinguish them even when they share a parent colour. Tap the back arrow to return. Works on both the dashboard and budget pages.

Budget Group Drill-Down demo

Other Updates

A handful more things you may notice this week:

  • Over-budget alerts: push notifications can now fire at 50%, 80%, and 100% of a category budget, not just when you've already gone over. Configurable in the Profile Settings page from the app.
  • Subscriptions: same merchant under different bank descriptions now collapses into one row. Manual subscriptions can now be added yourself. Several smaller fixes to hidden subscriptions, miscounting, and exclude-from-budget toggles.
  • Goals math: debt goals now factor in monthly interest accrual automatically. Savings goal math overhauled for edge cases. Rollover categories now properly track when a previous month's surplus is drawn from.
  • Bank logos: TD, EQ Bank, and several credit unions now show the correct logo instead of a generic wallet icon. KOHO and Alterna Credit Union now route through Flinks for better reliability.
  • Calendar: fixed a bug where household members would sometimes see stale paycheque or bill dates after updates.

Goodbye Funds, Hello Rollover Categories

Goodbye Funds, Hello Rollover Categories

A lot of you have written in over the past few months about fund balances drifting, confusion over when to use a fund vs. a category, and more. We heard you, so we went back to the drawing board. There are no more Funds, just categories, with an optional rollover toggle for the ones that accumulate over time (vacation, emergency, gifts, holidays). One mental model and one place to manage everything.

A few things to note: balances now grow only from real transactions or manual adjustments, no more phantom auto-contributions. Every rollover has a full activity history you can click into and annotate.

Also This Week

A few more improvements you may notice:

  • Allocate from the dashboard: see an unbudgeted category on your dashboard? You can now allocate to it in one click, no more bouncing to the Budget page.
  • Day-of-month for monthly bills: pick the exact day a monthly payment is due. Your budget calendar now reflects it accurately.
  • Flinks beta updates: Smarter transfer detection and a fix for missing balances on a few connected accounts.

Big News: Flinks is Here

Flinks Is Finally Here (In Beta)

A lot of our Canadian users have run into issues connecting certain banks through Plaid (our primary provider), and that's been a consistent pain point we've wanted to solve.

Flinks is a Canadian company based in Quebec that specializes in bank connectivity and has stronger Canadian bank support. If you've been struggling to connect with RBC, CIBC, or certain credit unions, this is the one you've been waiting for. And if you've had success with Plaid, not to worry, that's not going anywhere! We're just expanding to offer more options.

So... How Much Can I Spend Right Now?

Safe to Spend · Statement Imports, Upgraded · Pick Your Import History · Payday on Your Calendar

Safe to Spend

Our latest feature, Safe to Spend, gives you a quick look at how you're doing this month so far based on your income schedule, and spending so far across your categories. It accounts for upcoming bills, variable income, and your paycheque cadence.

Safe to Spend is designed to give you a quick peek into how you're doing at the moment and if you're on track to meet your budget and goals this month. If you'd rather not have it on your dashboard, no problem, it's also dismissible.

Safe to Spend screenshot

Statement Imports, Upgraded

If you've been importing bank statements manually, this one's for you. You can now give your imported account a name (like "BMO Chequing" or "TD Visa") and we'll automatically find and attach your bank's logo.

Your transactions will show up with the right logo, and you can filter and report by account, just like users who connect through Plaid.

This is a big one for those whose banks aren't supported by Plaid yet or if you prefer to sync your bank manually. Your manual imports now feel like a first-class experience.

Statement Imports, Upgraded screenshot

Pick Your Import History

When connecting a bank, you can now choose how far back to import your transaction history: 3, 6, 12, 24 months, or a custom number. Just tap the gear icon next to the Connect Bank button to open the history picker. A big improvement for new users who want more context than the default 90 days.

For existing users you can just select a longer history if you want and the app should automatically skip existing days and backfill for the missing days.

Pick Your Import History screenshot

Payday on Your Calendar

I can't believe we didn't think of this one before 🫣. The budget calendar now shows your upcoming paydays alongside your bills and expenses. A small change that makes a big difference when you're planning ahead.

Payday on Your Calendar screenshot

Under the Hood

A handful of meaningful fixes and improvements you may notice this week:

  • Variable income users now get a low-income warning starting on day 15 of the month instead of day 1, so no more unnecessary stress before your first paycheque arrives
  • Fixed an issue where household members connecting the same bank as their partner were being flagged as duplicate accounts
  • Smarter transfer detection so transfers between accounts no longer double-count as income or expenses
  • Better household handling when a member leaves, no more orphaned records
  • CSV imports: fixed Excel date format parsing, smarter date detection, and fixed bulk import issues that were silently dropping rows

One App, Two Budgets: Yours & Ours

Personal & Shared Budget Profiles

Household budgeting just got a whole lot smarter. Household members can now switch between their personal budget and a shared household budget in a single tap. Your personal spending stays private, and your partner only ever sees the shared view.

A new profile switcher lets you toggle seamlessly between "My Budget" and your household budget. Budget together without giving up your financial privacy. Perfect for those of you juggling both shared and individual accounts.

Finally, A Plan to Kill Your Debt

Goal Target Dates · Debt Payoff Strategies · Edit Categorization Rules · Better Data Export

Goal Target Dates

Set a target date on any savings or debt goal and Waypoint Budget will automatically calculate the monthly contribution you need to hit it on time. No more guessing, just a clear number to work toward.

If you're already using the goals page and prefer to set a fixed monthly amount instead, that option isn't going anywhere. This is just one more way to plan, whatever works best for you.

Goal Target Dates demo

Debt Payoff Strategies

Until now, you could track your debts and set aside a monthly amount toward each one. That's a solid start, but it leaves a big question unanswered: am I on track to become debt-free? Debt payoff strategies answers that. Choose a method, and Waypoint Budget builds you a real plan:

  • Avalanche: pay off your highest-interest debt first to save the most money overall
  • Snowball: knock out your smallest balances first to build momentum and stay motivated

You'll see exactly when each debt gets paid off and how much interest you'll save. No more hoping the numbers work out. Just a clear path to debt freedom! (This one is our personal favourite. Thank you TiPoev via FeatureBase for the suggestion!)

Edit Categorization Rules

You've always had rules that automatically sort your transactions into categories, but now you can view and edit them too! Head to your Profile Settings page to take full control of how your spending gets categorized.

Smarter Categorization and Goal Insights

Retroactive Transaction Editing · Upgraded Goals Page · Income Frequency Calculator · "New" Tag on Synced Transactions · YNAB Import Fix

Retroactive Transaction Editing

Categorizing transactions just got smarter! When you set a category for a transaction (say, from Uniqlo), Waypoint Budget will now ask if you want to apply that same category to all past transactions from that merchant too. No more going back and manually updating every single purchase.

This will work for type changes and renaming too.

Retroactive Transaction Editing demo

Upgraded Goals Page

Your goals just got a whole lot more insightful. Goals now show projected completion dates, suggested contribution amounts, and progress insights so you can see if you're on track. No more wondering whether you'll hit your target on time. Waypoint Budget does the math and keeps you informed every step of the way.

Income Frequency Calculator

Setting up your budget just got easier. You can now tell Waypoint Budget how often you get paid (weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, etc.), and the app will automatically calculate your monthly income for you. No more manual math or guessing.

It will even do the math on months with an extra paycheque for biweekly and weekly earners so you never miss that bonus 👀

Income Frequency Calculator screenshot

"New" Tag on Synced Transactions

Never miss a newly synced transaction again. When bank transactions sync in, they now get a visible "new" badge so you can quickly spot what just came in and needs attention.

Smart Naming in CSV Imports, Auto Sync, and Manual Syncs

Ever noticed how your bank CSV imports or Bank Syncs have those cryptic transaction descriptions? You know the ones - "[OP]ONLINE PURCHASE 31JAN2026SKIPTHEDISHES MB" when all you want to see is "SkipTheDishes"?

Your transactions now display clean, readable merchant names automatically whether they're imported from CSV, synced manually, or pulled in through auto-syncs. Transaction names that finally make sense!

Reimbursement Tracking

No more inflated spending numbers. Mark expenses as reimbursable and log reimbursements that credit back to the original category instead of showing up as income.

  • Accurate Budget Math: Reimbursements zero out the original expense in that category, so your spending totals stay correct.
  • Track What's Owed: See which expenses are pending reimbursement at a glance.
  • Works With Your Workflow: Whether it's work expenses, split bills, or insurance claims.

Account Balances & Custom Colours

  • Budget Categories
  • Budget Allocations

We heard you: More bank connections. Done.

Waypoint Pro

Over the past few weeks, I kept hearing the same request: "I need to connect more than 1 bank."

You were right. One wasn't enough.

So we just launched Waypoint Pro.

Here's what you get:

  • 5 bank connections (vs 1 on Plus)
  • Sync transactions from all your accounts
  • Unlimited AI categorization

If you're already on Plus and need more connections, upgrading takes one click from the Bank connections tab. Your trial time gets credited automatically.

That's it. No catch. You asked, we listened, we built it.

And we're just getting started

Every feature above was shaped by feedback from people using Waypoint Budget every day. Try it and tell us what to build next.
