Built so you stay in control

An assistant can read your budget only while you say so, and never anything more.

Read-only

Every request can only read. There is no way for an assistant to move money, edit a transaction or change a setting.

Off by default

Nothing is shared until you turn the switch on in your profile. Turn it off and every connected assistant loses access that instant.

You approve each connection

The assistant never sees your password. You sign in on a Waypoint Budget screen and approve it, the same way you sign in to the app.

Nothing stays connected by accident

The switch turns itself off after 60 days without use, and whenever you change your password. Your profile shows when an assistant last read your budget.

What an assistant can see

  • Spending totals by category and merchant
  • Your budget for a month: planned, spent, remaining
  • Individual transactions, in small batches
  • Savings and debt goals with progress
  • Account names, types and balances
  • Upcoming recurring expenses and income
  • Net worth and its trend (Pro)

What it can never do

  • Change, add or delete anything
  • See account or card numbers
  • See your bank sign-in details
  • Export your history in bulk
  • See balances a household member has hidden
  • Read anything while the switch is off

Setup

First, in Waypoint Budget

    Open Profile, then Integrations, and turn on Connected assistants.

    Copy the server URL shown there: https://waypointbudget.com/api/mcp

In Claude

    Open Settings, then Connectors, then Add custom connector.
  2. 2
    Name it Waypoint Budget and paste the server URL. Claude detects the rest: keep Sign in now and Use Claude’s published identity selected, add no headers, and choose Add.

    Click Connect, sign in to Waypoint Budget, and approve access. The first time Claude reads your budget it asks once; choose Always allow and it will not ask again.

In ChatGPT

    Open Settings, then Security and login, and turn on Developer mode.

    Go to Plugins, then Browse plugins, and press the + button. Name it Waypoint Budget, paste the server URL under Connection, keep Authentication on OAuth, tick the acknowledgement, and choose Create.

    Sign in to Waypoint Budget when asked and approve access. Developer mode is available on ChatGPT Pro, Team, Enterprise and Edu plans.

Good to know

The profile currently selected in the app. A shared household budget can only be read through its owner’s assistant, and it includes every member’s transactions, the same as in the app.
No. Money Coach lives inside the app and knows your whole history. This brings your budget into the conversations you already have elsewhere.
To the assistant you connected, and only what it asks for. What happens there is governed by that provider’s privacy policy.
Yes. Any assistant that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth can connect using the same server URL. Claude and ChatGPT are the two we test against.
Make sure the switch in your profile is on and your plan is Plus or Pro, then remove and re-add the connector in the assistant.
