Why US Dollars Throw Off a Canadian Budget

Three ways the math slips

Spending Reads Too Low

At a rate near 1.40, US$1,000 on a US dollar card costs about $1,400. Counted one to one, your budget misses close to 30% of it.

Your Own Money as Income

Move $1,400 into your US dollar account and about US$1,000 arrives. If the two sides aren't matched, that deposit can count as income.

Balances That Don't Add Up

A US$10,000 savings balance is worth about $14,000. Added one to one with your other accounts, your totals come up $4,000 short.

Multi-currency, Done for You

Counted in Canadian dollars

The Rate for Each Day

Every US dollar transaction counts in Canadian dollars at the Bank of Canada rate for its date.

The Bank's Figure, Kept

Each converted row leads with the Canadian dollar amount and keeps the bank's own figure under it, like US$27.40.

Balances at Today's Rate

US dollar balances, and your net worth on Pro, convert at today's Bank of Canada rate, so your totals add up.

Exchanges Paired as Transfers

When your bank labels a move between your CAD and USD accounts as an exchange, the two sides pair into one transfer instead of counting as income.

Your Statement Amount

Have the exact Canadian dollar figure? Type the amount from your statement and it replaces the daily-rate one.

24 Currencies

Connected accounts take their currency from the bank. For manual accounts, pick one of 24 from the currency picker.

Who It's For

Life in two currencies

Cross-Border Workers

Work in the US and live in Canada? Spending on both sides of the border lands in one Canadian dollar budget.

Snowbirds

A winter down south on a US dollar card counts in the same budget as the rest of your year.

Paid in US Dollars

Freelancers and remote workers with US clients see each US dollar payment in Canadian dollars, at that day's rate.

US Dollar Savers

Keep savings in US dollars? The balance converts at today's rate, so your totals stay honest.

Frequently Asked Questions

About US dollar accounts

Which exchange rate does Waypoint Budget use?
Waypoint Budget uses the Bank of Canada daily rate for each transaction's date. The Bank publishes one rate per business day, so a purchase on a weekend or holiday uses the last rate before it. Account balances and net worth use today's rate.
Why doesn't the Canadian dollar amount match what my bank charged?
Banks convert at their own rate, which includes a markup, while Waypoint Budget uses the Bank of Canada rate, so the two are close but rarely the same to the cent. Fees aren't tracked separately. If you know the exact Canadian dollar figure, open the transaction and type the amount from your statement. It replaces the daily-rate figure, and the bank's own figure stays under it.
Can I set my budget in US dollars?
No. Your budget currency is set by country: Canadian dollars, or US dollars for members who join from the US. There is no setting to change it. A US dollar budget converts Canadian dollar accounts into US dollars the same way.
Which currencies does Waypoint Budget support?
Waypoint Budget supports 24 currencies, the ones the Bank of Canada publishes a daily rate for: US dollar, euro, British pound, Mexican peso, Japanese yen, Swiss franc, Australian dollar, New Zealand dollar, Chinese yuan, Hong Kong dollar, Indian rupee, South Korean won, Singapore dollar, Swedish krona, Norwegian krone, Brazilian real, Indonesian rupiah, Malaysian ringgit, Peruvian sol, Polish zloty, Thai baht, Turkish lira, New Taiwan dollar and South African rand.
Does it work on the free plan?
Yes. Multi-currency works on every plan, including Free, where you add manual accounts and pick each one's currency. Bank connections depend on your plan: Plus connects one bank, and Pro has unlimited bank connections and adds net worth tracking.
What happens when I move money between my CAD and USD accounts?
When both accounts are in Waypoint Budget and your bank labels the move as an exchange, the two sides pair into one transfer, so your own money moving doesn't count as income or spending. Banks word these moves differently, so if one doesn't pair, set both sides to Transfer so neither counts, and let us know so we can take a look.
